I’m really proud of the smart comments creating dialogue around gentrification of gay bars.

I don’t think this is the end of this vital discussion.

The other day when volunteering at the Quatrefoil Library a patron was discussing how he shops at a certain store because they had a greater selection of colors.
“I like bright colors. I guess because I’m GAY.”
I didn’t really ponder the connection, real or perceived, between sexuality, gender expression, and flamboyant colored clothing until a few days later. On a walk with my boyfriend he was gay bashed for wearing a shiny purple jacket.
“That jacket’s too tight. That jacket makes you look GAY. You look like a fag!”
“Thanks man!”
Are bright colors on male-bodied people really that threatening that you have to constantly shout at someone even after you’re a block away? My boyfriend said that his sexuality, in this case, didn’t even matter to the harasser. It was the dangerously flamboyant purple jacket that set them off.
(Gender bashing sucks, but here’s the TC Avenger’s UnBash Project!)
